Boy, 11, dies following battle in hospital after crash which killed best friend

An 11-year-old boy who was hit by a car has died following a fight for his life in hospital after the crash killed his best friend.

Mason Deakin was riding his bike with best friend Steven Duffield when they were hit by a car in Hull.

Both boys suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary where tragically Steven died.

Mason was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary where he was in a coma and on life support.

The schoolboy battled for a fortnight in intensive care, however his death has now been confirmed after his life support machine was switched off.

A man, 30, was arrested on suspicion of driving offences after the incident – before being released under investigation.

His uncle Karl shared the devastating news on Monday evening that his “fun loving” nephew had lost his fight.

Launching a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for Mason’s funeral, Karl said: “Mason Lee fought for his life for two weeks in intensive care and on life support but as a result of a serious head injury he could not fight on no more.

“I am asking for help and support to help my family raise the funds for funeral costs. I would be very grateful at this sad time for all your help and support as would his mam Kirsty and his dad Jordan.

“Mason was a fun loving little lad and it’s touched so many hearts of Hull.”

Mason’s dad, Jordan Deakin, previously told Hull Live that the family is “in bits” as they keep their hopes up that Mason will pull through.

“He is in intensive care on life support and we have been told by doctors that we have got to take it hour by hour at the moment.”

A spokeswoman for Humberside Police previously said: “It was reported that at 6.10pm on Monday, a blue BMW had collided with two boys riding a bike. Both boys were taken to hospital where Steven tragically passed away from his injuries.”

She added: “A 30-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving offences has been released under investigation as we continue our enquiries.”

Following the news of Mason’s death Humberside Police released a statement.

It read: “We are very sorry to report that 11-year-old Mason Deakin has sadly passed away in hospital following a collision on Anlaby Road in Hull on Monday 19 October, in which 10 year-old Steven Duffield also lost his life.
